Im Jahr 1949 in Unna geboren, begann er mit fünf Jahren Klavierunterricht zu nehmen, mit 11 Jahren parallel zum Gymnasium Jungstudent an der Hochschule für Musik Detmold, Abt. Dortmund, dort pädagogisches Klavierdiplom mit Auszeichnung. Es folgen Studien am Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris mit bedeutenden Persönlichkeiten wie Trouard, Messiaen, Dubois, Sancan, Casterède, Ciccolini, Perlemuter, Loriod u.a.

Neben dem Konzertexamen dort (im Salle Gaveau Paris, summa cum laude) errang er da selbst 1. Preise in den Disziplinen Klavier, Kammermusik, Dirigieren, Solfège und Komposition etc., daneben schrieb er an der Sorbonne am musikwissenschaftlichen Institut eine Diplomarbeit über das Thema (doctorat d´université): “l`effet psychologique du triton et de l`accord mystique dans la musique d`Alexandre Scriabine“.

Er veröffentlichte bereits verschiedene Bücher wie etwas „wie übt man effektiv?“. Pröll war mehrfacher internationaler Preisträger und gibt seitdem Konzerte in der ganzen Welt. Er ist Gast als Solist mit Orchester, als Kammermusiker (mit bedeutenden Musikern wie z.B. I. Oistrach) und als Solopianist in renommierten Konzertsälen wie der Berliner Philharmonie, der Sydney Opera, der Shanghai Concert Hall, dem Brisbane Art Center, dem Seoul Art Center, dem Paris Salle Gaveau, dem Leipziger Gewandhaus oder der Köln Philharmonie etc.

Meisterkurse und Vorträge an Universitäten und Musikhochschulen in den USA, Südamerika, Australien, Neuseeland, Korea, Japan, China, Südafrika, Marokko, Slowenien, Kroatien, Italien, Spanien, Frankreich etc. Er nahm 32 Schallplatten und CDs auf und hatte Rundfunk-und Fernsehaufnahmen in vielen Ländern. 1987 initiierte und organisierte er den Internationalen Franz Schubert Klavier-Wettbewerb in Dortmund, der inzwischen weltweit durch seine besondere Prägung anerkannt ist.

Er ist Jurymitglied bei internationalen Klavierwettbewerben. Von 1976-1996 lehrte Roland Pröll als Dozent und Professor für Klavier und Kammermusik an der Musikhochschule Detmold, Abteilung Dortmund. Dort 1988-1990 Dekan und Mitglied des Senats der Musikhochschule Detmold als Leiter der Musikhochschulabteilung Dortmund. Nach der Schliessung der Abteilung Dortmund 1996 baute Pröll die Ibach-Akademie in Schwelm für junge besonders begabte Pianisten auf. Gleichzeitig gibt Pröll mehrmals im Jahr Meisterkurse für Klavier an verschiedenen Universitäten und Musikhochschulen Koreas, Japans und Chinas.

In den Jahren 2001 Gastprofessur für Klavier und Kammermusik an der Atsugi Showa Academia Musicae Tokio, 2002 Gastprofessur am Conservatorio Nacional Superior de Musica de Murcia, Spanien; 2003 bis heute: Lehrtätigkeit am IfM der Fachhochschule Osnabrück (Klavier und Kammermusik, Korepetition), 2007 Lehrauftrag an der Technischen Universität Dortmund, Institut für Musikpädagogik und Musikwissenschaft als Professor für künstlerische Solmisation und Klavier (ab Wintersemester 2007/2008), 2006 Ausgedehnte Gesprächskonzertreise durch China, 2008/09 Konzertreise durch China mit Orchester als Solist mit dem 4. Klavierkonzert von Beethoven, 2007/08 neue Buchveröffentlichung: „Künstlerische Solmisation“ – wie übt man effektiv?, 2009 Leiter des Studienprofils Klassik am Institut für Musik der FH-Osnabrück, 2010 Leiter der Kammermusik am IfM. Ebenso gibt er Meisterkurse in China und Korea Osterfestival Cervo/Italien.

Gastprofessur an der Jiujang University of Arts, Jianxi, China im Jahr 2015. In den Jahren 2014/15 Initiator des Internationalen Mozart Wettbewerbs „Drei Generationen Mozart“ Hagen und Leiter des Kammermusikfestivals Hagen.

Roland Pröll had his first piano lessons at the age of 5. When he was 11 he became a student of Dieter Wollert at the Dortmund Music university in Germany. There he passed his diploma with distinction. After this he continued his studies in Paris at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique with Messiaen, Loriod, Sancan, Dubois, and other famous teachers. As well as studying the piano, he also studied other musical disciplines such as conducting and composing. The taught method of Solfège was a formative influence for him, especially in France, leading to his support for the dissemination of this method all over the world.

He finished his studies in musicology at the Sorbonne in Paris and became a Ph.D., (Doctorat d`Université). After this he became a student of Arthur Rubinstein and worked with other famous musicians. He has gained many first prizes in international competitions, and he gives concerts all over the world. He is a guest of Sydney Opera House, Berlin Philharmonie and others. His fame has spread, especially in Japan and Korea, and more recently in China. Since 2005 he has been working with the Murcia Symphony Orchestra, and he goes on tour with them through Spain. He has recorded many CDs and has made many special recordings for television and radio all over the world.

He taught at the Dortmund Music university as a professor until 1996 and he led the institute from 1988 to 1990 as dean. From 1999 to 2002 he was dean of the Ibach-Academy in Schwelm, Germany, which was founded in co-operation with him. In the time period from 2006 to the middle of 2007 Roland Pröll worked as a musical leader of the non-profit association Viva la Musica e.V. in Bad Oeynhausen, Germany. Because of decrease in demand the association dissolved at the end of June 2007. Since that time Pröll works as a tutor and artist for the music agency „Musikagentour Viva“ in Bad Oeynhausen, Germany.

In 1987 he founded the international Schubert-Competition in Dortmund, which is today one of the great piano competitions. (Today’s leader is Arnulf von Arnim). Today Roland Pröll holds professorships for piano and chamber music at the Atsugi Showa University of Music in Tokyo, Japan, at the Conservatorio Superior de Musica in Murcia, Spain, and at the Conservatory in Osnabrück, Germany. He gives masterclasses and concerts all over the world.
